Suitability
If you are concerned
about potential major medical expenses like hospitalization and
surgery, but are not
worried about relatively
minor costs of occasional Doctors visit and Prescriptions…then an HSA
program fits.
Because, with an HSA compatible policy, the
big-ticket care (hospital, surgery) triggers the insurance coverage.
Both HSA policies
provide 100% Coverage including
Drugs after the Deductible chosen.
PPO
verses HSA Premium
Example Family - male 39, female 37, boy 10,
girl 8, no tobacco, Duval residence
PPO cost $559/month,
HSA cost $285/month
Premium savings
$274/month
or $3288/year
Health Savings Account (HSA) Forecast
Instead of paying high premiums, deposit the
premium savings into your own HSA and deduct off your taxes.
Bank then issues you an HSA debit card to pay
medical expenses below your deductible at insurer’s
discounted rates,
plus all other health care costs
not covered by traditional medical insurance
including dental, hearing and vision.
Assume your debit card health care costs will
average 50% of the HSA deposits, which leaves 50% invested.
Remember, your HSA earns interest, plus
your unused funds rollover and accumulate without forfeiture,
and that
your deposits are
not spent but saved for future health care expenses, retirement or
inheritance.
Tax-Trifecta
HSA deposits are Tax-Deductible, interest is
Tax-Deferred, and health care distributions are Tax-Free.
HSA deposits are completely voluntary, you
can put in zero or any amount up to the maximums that follow.
Maximum 2008 contributions are
$5,800/family
or $2,900/individual,
with a one-time IRA transfer allowed,
plus a
$900/year extra allowance per
insured over age 55. Like an IRA, early or non-qualified withdrawals
are taxable with 10% penalty. If you are
self-employed, the health insurance premium is also Tax-Deductible.
If
Hospitalization/Surgery before Deductible Fully Funded
Move money from another account into HSA and
tax-deduct it. Transfer money from IRA into HSA tax-free.
Worse case, hospitals
will accept monthly payments (the extra premiums you would have been
paid for PPO).
